High winds, making it dangerous for Veendam to dock, mean Corfu is skipped. By the following day, conditions have improved and we arrive in Katákolon, closest port to Olympia.
At first, I’m a bit disappointed …
… but cheer up on an empty, moody beach that stretches for miles …
… passing a seaside house with ornamental gate straight out of 1950s middle America …
… a hotel that looks closed for the season …
… and Orthodox shrine.
Eventually, a friendly café …
… with excellent coffee …
… and none of your citified, namby-pamby concerns about smoke, secondhand or otherwise. Cough! Hack!
Katákolon improves with walking.
I find a wagon, sponsored by a gelateria and used for local celebrations. No idea why the writing’s not in Greek.
A jolly festival bull …
… and some colourful fishing boats …
… which provide a useful backdrop for Japanese tourists. Now for a relaxing Mythos beer …
Oops! Sorry, wrong season, wrong picture.
Cheers! Στην υγειά σας!

We’re in Athens. I’m under the weather and remaining on the ship. If there’s a day for feeling seedy and having cabin service meals, this is it. A downpour has lasted most of our stay.
Many thanks to Ron, fellow passenger from Toronto, who kindly provided the pictures below.
The changing of the guard at the Greek parliament is on extremely slippery marble. Today, the guards had to be assisted to their positions.
On an earlier trip, Ron took these shots of a normal ceremony.
(Later I discover that, the day before our arrival, torrential rain led to nearly twenty dying in Athens flooding.)
